Why Is My Electricity Bill So High?
There are several reasons why your electricity bill may be higher than expected. Understanding these factors can help you reduce your monthly energy costs.
1. Your electricity consumption (measured in kWh or units) and your sanctioned load (kW) are the two primary factors that determine your bill amount.
2. Higher electricity consumption and a higher connected load generally result in higher energy and fixed charges.
3. High-power appliances such as air conditioners (ACs), geysers, water pumps, electric irons, induction cooktops, and electric heaters consume significant electricity and can substantially increase your monthly bill.
4. Even moderate-power appliances such as ceiling fans, air coolers, and water heating rods can add noticeable electricity costs when used for several hours every day.
5. Electrical issues such as wiring leakage, faulty electricity meters, loose connections, or shared wiring can sometimes lead to unexpectedly high electricity bills. If you suspect a fault, contact your electricity provider for an inspection.
6. Older or low energy-efficiency appliances consume more electricity than modern energy-efficient models. Replacing them with energy-efficient appliances can help reduce your monthly electricity bill.
7. Not sure which appliance is consuming the most electricity? Use our Electricity Consumption Calculator to estimate the monthly units (kWh) used by each appliance and identify where you can save energy.

What Is a kWh (Unit of Electricity)?
A kilowatt-hour (kWh), commonly called an electricity unit, is the standard unit used to measure electricity consumption. Your electricity bill is calculated based on the total number of kWh (units) consumed during the billing period.
1 kWh = 1 unit of electricity.
It means using a 1 kW (1000-watt) appliance continuously for 1 hour.
Example 1: If you use a 1 kW air conditioner for 1 hour, it will consume 1 (1 unit) of electricity.
Example 2: If you use a 2 kW submersible water pump for 1 hour, it will consume 2 kWh (2 units) of electricity.
Example 3: If the combined power rating of all the appliances running in your home is 5 kW, using them together for 1 hour will consume approximately 5 kWh (5 units) of electricity.
Understanding kWh helps you estimate your electricity consumption, calculate your monthly electricity bill, and identify appliances that use the most energy.
What Is Metered Consumption and Assessed Consumption?
Your electricity bill may include one of the following types of electricity consumption:
1. Metered Consumption
This is the actual electricity consumption (in kWh or units) recorded by your electricity meter during the billing period. It forms the basis for calculating your electricity bill under normal conditions.
2. Assessed Consumption
Assessed consumption is an estimated electricity consumption used by the utility company when the electricity meter is defective, inaccessible, damaged, or unable to record the actual usage.
In most cases, the assessed units are calculated based on your average electricity consumption from previous billing cycles, following the applicable regulations of your electricity provider.
In certain situations, such as meter tampering, electricity theft, or other exceptional cases, the utility may assess consumption using methods specified in its tariff rules and regulations.
How Can I Reduce My Electricity Bill in Madhya Pradesh?
You can reduce your monthly electricity bill by using electricity efficiently and avoiding unnecessary power consumption.
1. Replace conventional bulbs with LED lights and choose 5-star rated energy-efficient appliances whenever possible.
2. Minimize the use of high-power appliances such as air conditioners (ACs), geysers, electric irons, and water pumps, or operate them only when required.
3. Switch off appliances completely instead of leaving them in standby mode to avoid unnecessary electricity consumption.
4. Regularly inspect your home's wiring and electrical connections to prevent leakage and avoid hidden power losses.
5. If your electricity provider offers subsidies based on consumption, try to keep your monthly electricity usage within the eligible limit. Check the latest tariff order or subsidy scheme applicable to your consumer category in Madhya Pradesh.
What Is the Electricity Bill Subsidy in Madhya Pradesh?
Eligible domestic consumers in Madhya Pradesh (generally under the LV-1.2 Domestic category) may receive an electricity bill subsidy under the applicable state government scheme.
Under the current scheme, the subsidy is available only if your average daily electricity consumption does not exceed 5 units (kWh) per day.
Example 1: If your billing period is 30 days, your total electricity consumption should not exceed 150 units (kWh) to remain eligible for the subsidy.
Example 2: If your billing period is 40 days, you can consume up to 200 units (40 × 5 units) and still remain eligible, provided you satisfy the other conditions of the subsidy scheme.
The subsidy is generally calculated only on the eligible consumption limit as specified in the applicable tariff order. Any electricity consumed beyond the eligible limit may be billed at the normal tariff.
Note: Subsidy eligibility, amount, and conditions may change based on the latest Government of Madhya Pradesh policy and the applicable DISCOM tariff order.
What Is Net Metering in Solar?
Net metering is a system where solar power generated at your home is first used for your own consumption, and any extra electricity is sent back to the grid.
For the exported energy, you receive credits that are adjusted in your electricity bill, reducing your overall monthly cost.
If your solar system produces more electricity than you use, the extra units can be carried forward or adjusted as per your electricity provider’s rules.

What Is Time-of-Day (ToD) Tariff in Madhya Pradesh?
Time-of-Day (ToD) tariff means the price of electricity changes depending on the time you use it.
During peak hours (usually evening time), electricity may cost more because demand is high.
During off-peak hours (such as late night or early morning), electricity is cheaper because demand is low.
If you run heavy appliances like AC, geyser, washing machine, or water pump during off-peak hours, you can reduce your electricity bill.
This system helps balance electricity demand on the grid and encourages users to shift usage to cheaper time periods.
What Incentives Are Available in Madhya Pradesh Electricity Tariff?
1. Advance Payment Rebate: Consumers get a rebate on advance payments made before the billing period starts, based on interest linked to the working capital rate.
2. Prompt Payment Incentive: A 0.5% incentive is given if the bill is paid at least 7 days before the due date (for bills ₹10,000 or more).
3. Online Payment Rebate: A 0.5% rebate is available for paying bills online, with special benefit for domestic consumers (LV-1) without upper limit.
4. Load Factor Incentive: High load factor consumers get energy charge concessions of 12 to 36 paise per unit based on usage efficiency.
5. Power Factor Incentive: Consumers maintaining high power factor (86% to 100%) receive 0.5% to 10% incentive on energy charges.
6. Time-of-Day (ToD) Incentive: Using electricity during off-peak or solar hours can give up to 20% rebate, while peak-hour usage may attract surcharge.
What Is Delayed Payment Surcharge in Electricity Bill?
Delayed Payment Surcharge is charged when an electricity bill is not paid by the due date. A surcharge of 1.25% per month (or part of a month) is applied on the outstanding amount, including arrears.
For small bills up to ₹500, a minimum charge of ₹5 per month is applied, and for bills above ₹500, a minimum of ₹10 per month is charged.
Even a partial month is counted as a full month for calculation. However, no surcharge is applied after permanent disconnection of supply.
